Khandallah is one of the most desirable inner Wellington suburbs. Located in the hills to the north of the CBD Khanallah has good access to the city (aroun 20 minutes in peak hour) and also to the motorway heading north.
Khandallah is a large suburb and merges with Ngaio to the south. Broadmeadows is the next suburb going north and is quite distinct and much lower value than Khandallah.
Narbada Crescent is in Cashmere which is the hills area of Khandallah on the eastern side and centered around Onslow Road. Originally this area had relatively low, for Khandallah, property values because of the existance of power lines through the area. These were removed in the late 1980’s (?) and the land, overĀ the last 10 years or so, has been infillede with million-dollar plus homes which take advantage fo the grandstand views from the Hutt Valley to the airport.
Although prices are not as high as in the “Khandallah Village” this generally reflects the more mixed nature of the properties in the area rather than desirability of the area. One of the big attractions for families in the area is Cashmere Ave Primary School – which is a decile ten school which has an enrolment zone which includes Narbada Crescent. Other amenities in the area include several open parks and the spetacular, but steep, climb up the reserves of Mt Kau Kau.
There are several bowling clubs and a summer-only outdoor swimming pool as well as all the usual suspects as far as churchs and community groups are concerned.
Ganges Road is the main shopping centre, with an expensive New World supermarket which features a superb wine selection and long hours, 7 days a week. Also in the “village” are Hell’s Pizza, hairdressers, fish and chip shops, Khandallah Medical Centre, pharamacy, vet and dress shops.
The Montieth’s Ale House is a popular pub serving meals in a pseudo-Tudor building (actually 70’s but the open fire is nice and the food is good). There is also the fine dining establishiment of ??? – bookings required.
The train line passes through Khandallah on its way from Johnsonville to Wellington City. Johnsonville has the nearest shopping centre of any size although there is a petrol station on Burma Road in nearby Ngaio which is closer.
